Favorite Frosted Sugar Cookies

'Tis the season to bake all the things!

Making frosted sugar cookies is a tradition in our home during the holidays. I have tried so many sugar cookie recipes and finally came down to one that is the absolute best. I hope you love them as much as I do!

Sugar Cookies

Makes 4-5 dozen, depending on cookie size

  • 1 cup softened butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 4 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 4 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt.

Preheat oven to 350 F. Mix together butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla, sour cream until smooth. Set aside. In another bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Slowly add flour mixture to butter mixture. Mix until combined. Chill for at least one hour. Roll our chilled dough on floured surface to 1/8-1/4 inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to cut dough into desired shapes. Grease cookie sheet. Bake for 8-9 minutes. Completely cool before frosting.

Buttercream Frosting

  • 1/2 cup softened butter
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
Use beater to mix together butter and vanilla until fluffy. Slowly add sifted powdered sugar alternately with milk beating well after each addition. Mix in additional milk, if necessary, to make of frosting consistency.
